Montevideo Maru tragedy remembered

It was a wonderful and meaningful day at the Montevideo Maru Memorial in Stanhope on Wednesday, 1 July.

Congratulations to the Stanhope RSL Sub-Branch Committee for organising such a memorable event. The day began with a prayer, followed by the Last Post and Réveille, setting a respectful tone for the commemorations.

Guests heard from speakers who shared the stories of family members lost in the Montevideo Maru tragedy and watched two incredibly moving documentaries highlighting this important chapter of Australia’s history.

Following lunch, the open microphone session gave attendees the opportunity to share their own family stories and reflect on how the loss of loved ones aboard the Montevideo Maru has impacted generations of their families.

The event provided a fitting opportunity for the community to come together to honour the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and ensure their stories continue to be remembered.
