Community Bank supports Rushworth oral history project
Community Bank Rushworth is helping preserve the town’s rich history with a $20,000 grant to support an oral history initiative led by the newly established Waranga Regional Development Foundation Inc.
The new not-for-profit organisation has been formed to support and enhance the Rushworth district community. Its first major initiative, The Rushworth Project, aims to record the stories, memories and local knowledge that have shaped the town over generations.
The project will document the history behind many of Rushworth’s historic buildings by recording local residents sharing their memories, historical insights and personal anecdotes. The recordings aim to create a lasting record of the people and places that have contributed to the town’s unique character.
The first recording session was held on Monday, July 13, with Patrick Cronin from Idiomatic Arts producing audio recordings to bring the stories to life. The session marked the beginning of what is expected to become a valuable community archive for future generations.
Once completed, QR codes will be installed on participating historic buildings, allowing visitors and residents to scan the codes with their smartphones and listen to the stories connected with each location. A dedicated website will also provide access to the recordings and offer another way to explore Rushworth’s heritage.
Community Bank Rushworth representatives said the funding reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting projects that strengthen community connections, celebrate local identity and preserve the district’s history for future generations.
