Water, a precious resource
I guess many of us are starting to get a bit tired of the constant watering, fertilising, edging and mowing the lawn. With the heatwaves and droughts it seems an endless task.
Have you ever considered doing away with your lawn or at least reducing the size of it?
Many home owners are now moving away from large expanses of labour intensive lawns and planting a garden that uses much less water and needs less maintenance.
Imagine a garden that will attract native birds, butterflies, bees and beneficial insects that become part of your days entertainment watching them visit and staying for dinner. No need to put out food for the birds as they will simply feed from your nectar rich plants and insects.
If you’re on a town block mallee gums can be used effectively to create bird habitat with some fabulous trunks, foliage and flowers, for example, the much loved Silver Princess.
Understorey plants such as Banksias, Callistemon, Melaleucas and Wattles can be great screen plants to hide ugly fences and neighboring yards.
Grasses and groundcovers in the forefront bordering your pathways could include drumsticks, kangaroo paw, carex and a range of saltbushes.
So while the weather is hot it’s the perfect time to plan for what you could do next Autumn to create a haven for our local wildlife.
