Excerpt from Rushworth Chronicle 21/8/67

“Before a large crowd of parents and visitors, Mr Peter Ross-Edwards, MLA, officially opened the recently completed classroom at Colbinabbin State School. The occasion also marked the school’s 50th year.

During his remarks Mr Ross-Edwards pointed out the difference between the old and the new buildings, comparing big changes that have occurred in the education field over the 50 years.

Introducing the speakers, the president of the School Committee, Mr. F. S. Rathjen mentioned Mr. R.S.L. McDonald MLA, the Education Department, the Shire, teachers, Mothers’ Club and the committee for the part they all had taken to bring the school and its surroundings to the present standard.

He also made mention of the presence of Mr. J. H. Gamble, who was among the first pupils to attend the original school.

Other speakers were Cr. C. B. Hill for the Waranga Shire, and Mr. M. Collins, the District Inspector.

To commemorate the opening, Mr Ross-Edwards unveiled a plaque and planted a golden ash tree.

Prior to and following the ceremony, those present were able to inspect the work and activities of the children.”

This weekend, 28 and 29 October, Colbinabbin Primary will celebrate 100 years of education.

The Centenary year was officially launched in February with a morning tea, unveiling of a plaque and the burying of a time capsule.

This weekend the celebrations come to a head with a display of artefacts and memorabilia spanning the ten decade history of the school. The school will be open from 10:30-5pm on Saturday and 10:30-4pm on Sunday for all to enjoy.

On Saturday night, over a hundred people will gather for a meal and many an old story will be exchanged. This will continue on Sunday when the school will offer a BBQ lunch complemented by an ice cream van. Refreshments will also be available.

The school’s amazing Centenary Celebration book will be available for purchase. The book has been created through the efforts of School Council President, Iain Downie and principal, Robyn MacLean. There will be other memorabilia on sale over the weekend.

There has been a hardworking planning group behind the weekend who are pulling out all stops to ensure this once-in-one hundred-years celebration is memorable.
